Commons Comics is a review blog of mostly new comics and graphic novels, with a particular focus on writers and artists that keep the genre diverse, whether in terms of gender, race, class, ethnicity, region, or another category.
I originally came up with the title of the blog, Commons Comics, because it sounded nice and made some catchy alliteration with its host, Goshen Commons. I’ve kept the title since then because it reflects my belief in the worth of comics as a unique and uniquely powerful form of storytelling. As I said in an earlier post for the “Elkhart Truth,” I believe that comics and graphic novels are, in our visually obsessed time, an ideal format for fostering a commons—a “public square,” a community gathering place—of storytelling and artistic expression that reflects, processes, imagines, and reimagines the past, present, and future of the so-called “human condition.”
Put more simply, the comics I love most bring people together to tell and listen to stories in a way that no other format can.
